Fife Walks for #ScotlandHour and our guests

As you’ll know if you regularly read our updates, we’re often to be found helping spread the news about the East Neuk of Fife on Twitter.  We like to join the monthly Twitter chat, #ScotlandHour as it’s useful for finding out more about what’s going on around the country which might be of interest to visitors to Scotland.

In April 2014, the chat is about walking and outdoors, which is of course a feature of any holiday at Sandcastle Cottage, as we’re so close to the Fife Coastal Path.  We’ve written about many of our favourite walks here, so this is a round-up of ideas for you to try on your holiday in Fife.

Tell us what is your favourite walk & why? #Scotlandhour

When in Crail, we always walk the small section of the Fife Coastal Path from Sandcastle Cottage, down past the Doocot, along towards Kingsmill and up along Castle Walk – it even features as our preferred route to the shops!

What’s your best place to see the sunrise, or sunset, and why?#Scotlandhour

We love the sunrise at Roome Bay in Crail.  The sun rises in the east, and we’re almost as east as you can be in the East Neuk of Fife.  If you visit between October and April, you don’t have to get up too early to see the sun rise, and you can even check how the sunrise is developing from your bedroom window at Sandcastle Cottage before deciding whether to head out.

Sunsets, not so much…

What resources do beginners need to take when walking? #Scotlandhour

Comfortable, appropriate footwear.  It’s our top tip.  For short walks by the sea, wellies are sometimes the thing, but rocky paths mean that stouter shoes or boots are a good investment.  It’s Scotland, so weather-appropriate clothing is also important.  Check the weather forecast before you go and be prepared for changes.  A map is useful, especially when GPS devices rely on phone signals, and these are not always available when you’re lost!  I’d always take a camera too.  You never know what you’ll see…

Besides walking, what’s your favourite outdoor activity? #Scotlandhour

Taking photographs! Love to share photos of our travels around the county of Fife.  Family members enjoy playing golf, and we’re discovering the best children’s courses around Fife as our children grow.  Current favourites are Elie Sports Club and Balgove.  We also enjoy visiting beaches, and the kids enjoy water sports at Elie Water Sports.
