Tentsmuir Beach – there are few better ways to spend a day out from Crail than making your way to the wild, windswept beauty of Tentsmuir Beach. It is a day that combines quiet country roads, coastal scenery and, finally, miles of golden sand and open sea.
Tentsmuir Beach – How to get there:
Leaving Crail take the A917 to St Andrews. Follow the road through St Andrews passing the Cathedral Ruins. Continue along North Street joining the A91 towards Guardbridge. At the roundabout at Guardbridge take a right turn joining the A919. Travel through Guardbridge past Leuchars Station taking a left to join the road toward St Michaels. At St Michaels take a right turn and follow the road towards Tayport. You will fin a sign halfway along this road directing you to Tentsmuir Beach and National Nature Reserve.
Tentsmuir Beach and National Nature Reserve is an expansive area of dunes, woodland, wetlands and coastline near the mouth of the River Tay.
One of the pleasures of the trip is that the journey itself becomes part of the day. There is no need to rush. Stop when you see an interesting view, take photographs and enjoy the changing scenery.
Tentsmuir Beach
Eventually, the trees and dunes open up and you arrive at Tentsmuir Beach. Please note there is a charge of £4.00 for parking which you cannot avoid as there is a barrier acros the road.
The first impression is one of space. The beach stretches for miles, with wide sands meeting the waters of the North Sea. On a clear day, there are wonderful views across the water towards the Tay estuary and back towards St Andrews. Tentsmuir has a wonderfully untamed character. The sound of the waves, the wind moving through the dunes and the enormous open sky create a sense of calm.
A long walk along the beach is the perfect way to spend the afternoon. You can simply follow the shoreline, search for shells, photograph the dunes or find a quiet spot to sit and watch the sea. Look out for the seals on the sandbanks.
Tentsmuir Beach – A picnic by the sea
One of the highlights of a day at Tentsmuir is having lunch outdoors. There is a a place to buy food and drink on site and plenty of picnic tables near the car park. There are also public toilets with baby changing.
Alternatively if you’ve picked up supplies in Crail, then find a sheltered spot away from the busiest areas and enjoy a picnic overlooking the beach.
Of course, Scottish coastal weather can be unpredictable, so it is worth bringing an extra layer. A sunny morning can quickly turn into a breezy afternoon, but the changing weather is part of the character of the coast.
Tentsmuir Beach – Exploring beyond the beach
Tentsmuir is more than just its beach. The surrounding nature reserve is home to a variety of wildlife and habitats, making it a rewarding place for anyone who enjoys walking and nature.
The woodland paths provide a change of scenery from the open beach, while the dunes offer plenty of opportunities to explore. Keep an eye out for birds and other wildlife as you walk, particularly around the quieter areas of the reserve.
For photographers, Tentsmuir is particularly appealing. The combination of dunes, woodland, sea and huge skies provides something different throughout the day. Early morning and late afternoon can be especially atmospheric when the light begins to soften.
For cyclists there are a number of off road cycle tracks through the trees for you to enjoy.

A day out from Crail to Tentsmuir Beach doesn’t require an elaborate itinerary. That is perhaps what makes it so enjoyable. Add a picnic, a long walk and a little good weather, and you have all the ingredients for a memorable day out.
